ABOUT THE COMPANY:
Our client is a contract manufacturing and synthetic biology biofoundry focused on cell and gene therapies. The Company was formed in 2023 with a vision to combine industry leading expertise in synthetic biology with advanced cGMP capabilities in order to accelerate the development and commercialization of genetic medicines. They offer their customers an extensive technology platform and know-how that spans early stage product design, technical development, and cGMP compliant production. The technology platform includes bioinformatic-guided discovery of cell type promoters, directed evolution of small molecule-regulated gene switches, and the engineering of highly sensitive kill switches for enhanced safety and control of cellular therapies.
LOCATION:  Alameda, CA. Hybrid. 2-3 days per week.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Controller will oversee company financials and help build accounting standards. The ideal candidate will have experience as an accountant in the industry, preferably in a senior role. As a strong communicator and skilled financial analyst, this person will streamline our budgeting, payroll, and financial reporting processes. The Controller will also produce thorough financial status reports for senior managers to help improve our operational efficiency and aid in our continued growth. Initially this will be in coordination with a financial services firm, and then help to build out internal resources as we grow.
Responsibilities:
  • Implement consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, adhering to national and local legal standards while remaining knowledgeable of proposed legislation
  • Develop and enforce internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, policies, procedures, and workflows
  • Maintain internal safeguards for revenue receipts, costs, and team and organizational budgets and actual expenditures
  • Provide comprehensive financial updates to senior managers by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting appropriate data points
  • Help guide financial decisions by applying company policies and procedures to current economic landscape
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in business, accounting, or related field
  • 10 or more years of experience in finance and 3+ years as a senior level accounting or finance manager
  • Experience running all finance operations, including budgets, reporting for the site, and supporting forecasts
  • Ideally has prior experience running a CDMO/manufacturing site
  • Comfortable being the initial FTE for the finance function
  • Experience working with an external accounting team
  • Professional certification, such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CA (Chartered Accountant)
  • Cash Management/Treasury experience
  • Ability to oversee/manage a team of Various Function Areas
  • Internal Audit experience
  • Understanding of NetSuite/ERP
  • Strong understanding of banking processes and financial data analysis
  • Working knowledge of national and local tax regulations and compliance reporting
  • Exemplary history of financial project management
  • Experience with a small to midsize company in a fast growth or start-up environment
Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, office location and other geographic considerations, as well as other business and organizational needs. With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure: $200,000-$240,000. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
